Description
Two original works on artist's board:
1. A Locomotive Cab Design for General Motors Electro-Motive Division (Circa 1948.) This slightly surreal black-and-white image, nominally of a General Motors F3 locomotive produced from 1947 through 1949, is signed by the artist lower right. The lack of air horns, windshield wipers, and other devices is artistic license, or the sketch is a work in progress.
Sight size is 13 x 20, measures 20 x 26 inches overall.
Good condition noting some soiling and line drawing upper right corner.
2. An Imaginary Silver Age Streamliner (Circa 1945.) This appears to be somewhat of an imaginary locomotive design. On one hand, the four-wheel trucks indicate it is an F unit. On the other hand, the crease in the nose was only found in the early E units (E1 through E6). With a date of 12-13-45 on this painting, it is likely that design is an early proposal for the post-war update of the FT, aka the F2/F3. These had portholes on the side but no nose crease.
The handsome original grisaille painting with airbrush highlights on HI-ART artist Illustration Board is signed lower left front by Ben Dedek, head of the General Motors Electro-Motive Division styling department during the early days of the Silver Age of the streamliner era.
It seems very unlikely that this prototypical painting was ever reproduced as a lithographic print widely published by GM like so many of the color compositions depicting known examples. This is almost certainly the only record of this design.
Image size 14 x 21, measures 20 x 26 inches overall.
Very good original, clean untouched condition. There are no issues of major scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up.
3. Silver Age Streamliner Locomotive (Circa 1948) This original work, like a couple others in this collection, appears to be a design proposal for the F3 or possibly F7 locomotive. The locomotive number strongly suggests the drawing was made in 1948. The F3 was produced from 1945 through February 1949, while the F7 was produced from 1949 through 1953. This locomotive has a crease on its nose which did not in fact appear on any F series locomotive.
The handsome original grisaille illustration with satin-like airbrush highlights on HI-ART artist's illustration board is signed lower left front by Ben Dedek, head of the General Motors Electro-Motive Division styling department during the early days of the Silver Age of the streamliner era. It seems very unlikely that this prototypical painting was ever reproduced as a lithographic print widely published by GM like so many of the color compositions depicting examples in service. This is almost certainly the only record of this design.
Image measures 14 x 23.5, overall size 20.25 x 26 inches.
Very good original clean untouched condition. There are no issues of major scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up.
