Condition
The canvas has been lined. Scattered spots of surface dirt. Some traces of paint separation and craquelure to the horse and the kneeling figure, lower left. UV light reveals some scattered retouching to the framing edges, to the sky including a vertical line of approximately three inches to the centre of the sky and a surface scratch which has been filled to the left. Several other spots of inpainting each roughly 1cm square above the figure group to the right. In addition, some irregular lines of retouching which probably correspond to three small tears in the upper right quadrant. Further small areas of retouching around the rifle to the right and to the cloak of the central standing figure. Some areas of inpainting to craquelure to the kneeling figure on the left. The signature also appears to have been strengthened.
