Description
The ovoid porcelain jar has been hand thrown and hand painted with under glaze blue cobalt in a floral motif. I love the depiction of the magnolia tree with birds flying nearby and how one of the birds has turned his neck to look at another bird. The painter has artistically used shading in the magnolia flower petals.
The glaze, which has a slightly blue cast, has good control stopping just above the edge of the base. The base is flat with no glaze. You can see the potter’s wheel marks in the dense white clay. It has a good weight and was not thinly potted.
There are no marks or labels. The jar is topped with a much newer wooden lid.
Provenance: We purchased this jar from a reputable dealer in Portland, Oregon in the mid 1990s

7” tall x 4 ½“ diameter. Weighs 1 lb 6.9 oz (650 g)
