Description
bullage, salissure, wheel-engraving, enamelling, gilt, h8.0xdiameter8.8 cm
Condition
A very rare early work by Gallé with a sea myth as a motif. Green, blue, and black metal oxide powder (salissure) is enclosed in a thick crystal glass, and a pattern that evokes the splash and flow of water is applied. Furthermore, the fine air bubbles (bullage) scattered in the base express sea foam, and together with the sari sur, you can feel the complex changes in the expression of the sea. The goddesses of the sea are carefully carved on the belly of the vessel using wheel-engraving, making it seem as if the story is progressing. The enamelling and gilt decoration around the mouth enhances the design of the work. The extremely complex and calculated expression shows Gallé's insatiable quest for glass art.
