Description
Friedrich Carl Groeger (1766-1838) "Portrait of a Lady", miniature, ca. 1790
Friedrich Carl Groeger (1766 Ploen - 1838 Hamburg) was a son of a tailor and apprenticed to a turner and a house painter. Self-taught, he started to draw portraits and settled in Luebeck in 1785 where Heinrich Jacob Aldenrath became his pupil and soon a faithful friend. For many years these two artists worked together and a lot of the miniatures are signed with their two names. In 1789 they went to Berlin, then to Hamburg and in 1798 to Dresden. After a stay in Paris, Kiel and Copenhagen, they settled in Hamburg in 1814. Croeger also painted excellent portraits in oils and was a good lithographer.
Schidlof says he is familiar with only two(!) portraits by Groeger which are not painted in collaboration with Aldenrath, one of which is in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg, the other in the Museum of Luebeck.
Our miniature is on the top of the two, the third known portrait miniature painted by Groeger alone. Schidlof says further that those two Groeger's miniatures were painted on parchment in a fine monochrome "pointille" in sepia. That is exactly the case with our miniature as well!
