Description
1843 HERNANDO CORTES 1ed Despatches Spanish Conquistador MEXICO Aztec Charles V
“The Despatches of Hernando Cortes” is a collection of letters penned by Hernán Cortés de Monroy y Pizarro Altamirano, 1st Marquess of the Valley of Oaxaca, the famed Spanish conquistador who led the expedition resulting in the fall of the Aztec Empire. These letters were written during the period of conquest and contain an account of the events that transpired, addressed to Emperor Charles V. This book is the first English translation of Cortes original Spanish letters and includes an introduction and explanatory notes by George Folsom. Cortes narrative, noted for its sincerity, scrupulous attention to truth, and immersive descriptions, offers a firsthand look at the conquest of Mexico. Despite its historical significance, this narrative had been largely overlooked until this translation. Notably, the translator begins with the second letter because the first is lost and has never been found, thus Folsom provides an introduction covering the prior events.
