This capriccio or fantasy landscape of improbable groupings of figures and ruins in arcadian landscapes were popular with wealthy travelers in the 18th century. In a period gilt carved frame the reverse with early red wax collection seal and label "18th century in the manner of Panini" old owner's tag of A. Simpson and James Bourlet & Sons art packers & frame makers label. Giovanni Paolo Panini (1691-1765) was best known for his vistas of Rome and scenes of its ruins.
