Description
Lanark County, Ontario. Straw, pine, iron. Early Ontario bee skep made from twisted and coiled straw with a wooden handle and iron hoop to the base. The bee safe stands on a single pine board base with two dovetailed cleats. Bee skeps were used for centuries by families before the advent of larger flow hives that didn't disturb or kill the insects. 22" (on base) x 27.5" x 21.5" (on base). Skep only: 20.5" x 16.5". Condition
Small losses to binding. Base is associated, made from old pine and with new cleats.
