Item Details
Description
This is one of the rare examples of American WWII posters that feature a person of color. WWII occurred in the midst of the nation's racist Jim Crow laws, so the fact that this poster highlights the bravery of a specific black soldier is unusual. Obie Bartlett (1917-1993) was an American Navy private who lost his arm during the bombing of Pearl Harbor, which was America's entree into WWII. Here, he is shown bravely continuing to serve his country from the Home Front, as a welder for Naval ships in California. Bartlett spent five long months in the hospital following his amputation, after which he quickly began his welding training. His story was broadcast in local newspapers across America, as an inspirational story of national pride and valor. Bartlett was awarded a Silver Star for his efforts on the Home Front. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
