While the individual named on the bookplate is unidentified, the arms and motto of this armorial match that of Clan Campbell and the Duke of Argyll. Clan Campbell is a Highland Scottish clan, historically one of the largest and most powerful of the Highland clans. The Campbells have held titles in Argyll since 1457, and have even had royalty marry into the clan, when Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria, married John George Edward Henry Douglas Sutherland Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll in 1871.
