Description
Provincial Roman, 1st cent. B.C. - 1st cent. A.D. Bronze, iron. H. max. 1 57/64 in; 4.8 cm
The upper part of the body of a horse dynamically outstretched forelegs served as the knob of a handle. A profiled ring forms the transition to the handle. Eyes, mouth and joints schematically and in part angularly accentuated by grooves and notches. The ears point forwards attentively. The mane that rises up between them forms a high, jagged crest. Original iron dowels preserved in the ring.
Ring slightly worn, otherwise intact. Bronze surface very well preserved, due to its having been deposited in a river. Partially encrusted. Probably the handle applique of a knife or key.
Swiss priv. coll. M. Tritten, Basel-Landschaft. Purchased before 2010 on the Swiss art market in Basel. Previously German priv. coll. since the 1950s.
