Depicting Virginia Military Institute cadets led by color bearer Oliver Perry Evans overrunning Federal artillery at the Battle of New Market, Virginia on May 15, 1864, on the verso is a printed description of the original painting on which Carl wrote "ORIGINAL NOW OWNED BY V.M.I." and "COLOR STUDY FOR THIS ILLUSTRATION, OIL BY TOM LOVELL/USED IN 6 PART CIVIL WAR SERIES LIFE MAG. JAN 6 1961".
