Eugene Gustavovitch Berman (Russian American, 1899-1972), Figure Sleeping on a Rock
ink on paper, 1944, signed and dated at lower center, framed and matted under glass.
Frame dimensions 20 1/4 x 16 1/2 in.
Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Eugnene Berman fled during the Bolshevik Revolution to Paris in 1918, where he studied at the Academie Ranson. He was inspired by the "Neo-Romantics" in the area, though he spent most of his life traveling in Europe and studying the old masters.
In 1929, Berman had his first exhibition in America, and it was held at the Julian Levy Gallery in New York, where he exhibited until 1947. In 1935, Berman moved to the United States, and began designing sets for ballet performances at the Metropolitan Opera. In the 190's Berman had Guggenheim Fellowships with which he toured the Southwest and Mexico, painting landscapes and a series of Pre-Columbian and Baroque monuments. He retired to Rome in 1957, and he died there in 1972.
