Item Details
Description
Parsi Woman's Blouse (Jubla) from Gujarat, 19th Century. This sleeveless silk blouse features satin stitch embroidery, showcasing a distinctive Chinese-inspired design that covers both the front and back. Densely embroidered bands adorn the neckline, sleeve openings, and the bottom hem. Its dimensions are 22'' x 21'' (56 x 53 cm).The embroidery on this piece bears unique characteristics developed in Surat, an urban center located on the northwest coast of India. It traces its origins to a colony of Chinese immigrants who began producing garments for another immigrant community, the Parsis, who originally hailed from Iran and sought refuge in India due to persecution. The design and stitchwork of this blouse exhibit distinct Chinese influences, yet the garments themselves possess a quintessential Indian nature, much like saris, skullcaps, and, most notably, blouses. The Jubla, in its simple shape, captivates with its mostly figurative design, featuring an array of flowers, animals, and people of various sizes arranged in vignettes or linear order. This particular Jubla is adorned with bands depicting figures in diverse landscapes, engaging in various activities. Some figures are European in style, while others reflect Chinese influences. Notable scenes include a hunter on horseback with a gun, a guard wielding a sword, a banner carrier, a woman in a garden setting, and more. The level of detailing is truly extraordinary, with the satin stitch embroidery reminiscent of the figurative work seen on Canton shawls crafted for export.
