Description
Indian Delhi Shawl, Mid 19th C. Silk embroidery on wool. Size: 1'9'' x 8'4'' (53 x 254 cm). Delhi shawls were originally sashes for men, but became enormously popular in Europe in the 1850s as accessories for women. Some were embroidered on linen or netting. This one is embroidered on wool with stylistic influence from Kashmir. The botehs and florals motifs are executed in polychrome floss silk in satin stitch. Repairs to small holes in ground in center field, embroidery in very good condition
