Description
Indian Theyyam Headdress Mask, North Kerala, Early-Mid 20th Century. Carved wood. This mask centers the frontal face of Thira, a form of the goddess Kali in Kerala. It is surrounded by an assemblage of carved panels depicting musicians attending Gajalakshmi, who is shown seated in the lotus posture (padmasana) with a lotus flower in each hand. Flanking her are elephants that lustrate her with inverted pitchers of the elixir of immortality (amrita). Size: 21.5'' x 27'' x 5'' (55 x 69 x 13 cm)."
