Description
Uzbek Yellow Taffeta Chapan, 19th C. Yellow taffeta lined with five-color warp ikat. Size: 4'4'' x 6'7'' (132 x 201 cm). The Uzbek chapan (or coat) is used on ceremonial occasions such as weddings, funerals or religious holidays. The peculiar cut that makes it hard to close at front when worn results from it being accessorized with a very long and wide sash that gets wrapped around the midsection. Minor loss and stains to yellow taffeta, a patch of chintz to lining, fine.
