Item Details
Description
Kohistani Dress, Pakistan, 19th Century: Silk embroidery on cotton, adorned with metal decoration. Size: 3'0'' x 5'10'' (91 x 178 cm). This remarkable woman's dress, known as a jumlo, hails from the region of Kohistan, which is presently located in northern Pakistan and Afghanistan. It provides a captivating glimpse into the vibrant textile traditions of the area during the 19th century. The full skirt of the dress is an intricate tapestry of handwoven cotton triangles, meticulously crafted and sewn together. The sleeves and yoke of the garment are adorned with a stunning array of colorful geometric cross-stitch and satin-stitch embroidery, adding a burst of vibrancy to the ensemble. These embroidered sections are further enhanced by the addition of various metal coins, glass buttons, and silver pendants, creating a visually striking and culturally rich decoration. Additionally, polychromatic running stitches outline the triangles of the skirt, adding to the overall artistry of the piece. The dress was likely created by the woman who wore it, and traditionally, it would be accompanied by a pair of pants with embroidered cuffs and a hood-like headdress. Notably, the dress also incorporates noise-making adornments, which were believed to have a protective quality, warding off evil spirits. This Kohistani dress is a testament to the region's rich textile heritage, showcasing the fusion of intricate craftsmanship, vibrant colors, and cultural significance that makes it a unique and valuable piece of historical and artistic significance.
