Chinese Black Gauze Summer Robe, 19th C. An informal robe in black silk gauze. This summer robe has a subtle medallion design with off white delicately embroidered silk cuffs. In the summer heavy satin robes were traded for lighter garments made of semi-sheer silk gauze. The open weave of this robe provided ventilation.
