Description
Indonesian Gilt Paper and Cotton Runner from Sumatra, 19th Century. Crafted from wool, backed with cotton gauze, featuring gilt paper, metallic thread, and mica embellishments. Dimensions: 10'10'' x 0'9'' (330 x 23 cm). This striking, elongated red wool band was designed for the purpose of adorning rooms or canopied beds. Its intricate pattern consists of lozenges that encase stylized flowers and leaves, executed through the appliqué technique using gilt paper. Multiple borders of couched metallic thread further accentuate the paper's design, creating a captivating visual effect. The addition of faceted mica lends an extra layer of shimmer and dimension to the piece. The central band adorned with gilt decoration is flanked by two plain red wool borders. Such meticulous craftsmanship is typically associated with the Malays from the Palembang and Lumpung regions of Sumatra, as well as the Straits Chinese communities in Malaysia and Singapore.
