Description
Indonesian Embroidered Pants from the 19th Century. Dimensions: 40'' x 19'' (102 x 48 cm). These exquisite pants were likely crafted in Sumatra, possibly in Palembang, during the 19th century. They are fashioned from a luxurious golden yellow silk satin fabric with a subtle floral pattern. The pants are beautifully adorned with intricate gold metallic embroidery, forming bands of floral and foliate decorations around the base of the legs. These areas of metallic thread are elegantly outlined with a thick red thread, adding depth and contrast to the design. Both pant legs are finished with a piece of metallic woven braid at the hem, which appears to be silver in tone, either as originally intended or due to the passage of time, which may have affected the gold. A nearly identical pair of pants can be found in The Zaira and Marcel Mis Collection, as featured in "Asian Costumes and Textiles" on page 174.
