Item Details
Description
T'boli Peoples T'Nalak Fiber Ikat Ceremonial Cloth, Philippines, Early 20th Century. Woven from abaca fiber, this remarkable long T'Nalak ceremonial cloth, originating from the T'boli people of Mindanao, Southern Philippines, captures the essence of a vibrant cultural tradition. Measuring 0'10'' x 18'0'' (25 x 549 cm), these textiles held special significance during betrothal and marriage ceremonies. Known as t'nalaks or tinalaks, these cloths exhibit an astonishing diversity within a limited range of materials, colors, and designs. Nature served as the source for their colors, and the fibers of the abaca bark were their primary medium. What makes these textiles even more fascinating is their connection to dreams – it is believed that the intricate designs came to the weavers in their dreams, earning them the title of "dream weavers." The ikat technique used in crafting these cloths involves tie-dyeing threads before weaving, resulting in fuzzy borders between colors. In this particular piece, a harmonious palette of warm browns, both darker and lighter, is employed. The central motif showcases a mesmerizing image, resembling a lizard or an alligator, encircled by six-sided polygonal shapes with distinct borders.
