Description
Jan Jannson 1639. This detailed copperplate engraved map shows a large, obsolete political territory in northern Germany that was known as the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg. Magdeburg, referenced in the title, would become a separateDuchy several decades after publication. The image shows a fascinating mid-17th century overview of the region, and includes pictorial geographic information in addition to a wealth ofplace names and territorial outlines. The decorative cartouche in the lower left features two figures – one carries a sheaf of wheat and cornucopia, reflecting the bountiful agriculture, while another holds up an example of the finelocally produced glassware. Hand colored measuring 18 1/2" x 21 1/2 some tears int he margins.
