Charles Rodius (German/Australian, 1802-1860), mezzo-soprano Sara Flower, Charcoal and Conte Crayon, 1851, signed and dated lower left, with inscription on mat "Jenny Lind by Charles Rodius," with photocopy attached to back of frame reading 'Drawing of Jenny Lind, 'The Swedish Nightingale' by Charles Rodius,' matted and framed, with conservation glass. We thank David Hansen, Australian art historian and curator who recently assembled a major exhibition of the work of Charles Rodius for the State Library of New South Wales, Sydney, for his help in identifying the subject. Jenny Lind never visited the Australian colonies. Frame size: 20 7/8 in. x 18 in.Charles Rodius was a German-born artist and printmaker. He studied in France before moving to work and teach in England. While living in England he was accused of theft, found guilty and sent to an Australian penal colony. He was assigned to the Department of Public Works in Sydney where he drew military plans and architectural sketches. He was eventually granted a ticket of exemption and remained in Australia, where he made his living as an artist. His work is held in several major Australian museums and galleries.
