Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco culture, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. An evocative pottery hunchback figure depicted nude and lunging forward as he holds a ball in one hand and places his other on his knee. In Pre-Columbian times, the characteristics of hunchbacked people were believed to be signs from the divine; that they were in fact special, chosen individuals who were touched by the supernatural. This figure's identity as a ballplayer in addition to a hunchback renders him exceptionally rare; a truly special example from Jalisco culture. Size: 9.6" L x 7.5" W x 10.5" H (24.4 cm x 19 cm x 26.7 cm)

Hunchback and dwarf individuals are very common in West Mexican sculpture - indeed, they heavily outnumber portrayals of women (and some have theorized that this relates to their relatively high social status in the society). Some scholars attribute the hunched back in West Mexican shaft tomb culture to a particular form of tuberculosis; the protruding shoulders of this example may be part of the figure's deformity or the result of an emaciated state.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010

#179830
Condition
Professionally repaired with areas of restoration; all done very well and difficult to distinguish. Expected chipping, nicks, and abrasions as shown, all commensurate with age. Perforation to verso of top of head, as well as some stable surface fissures in areas. Otherwise, very nice presentation with good remaining pigments.
