Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, post Conquest, ca. 1500 to 1550 CE. A titillating blackware Chimu vessel in the form of two copulating monkeys - with explicitly delineated genitalia, quite amorous and most definitely monkeying around - a cylindrical spout rising above the pair. Monkeys have always fascinated humankind, with their zany antics that seem to mirror and, at times, parody humans. Understanding simian creatures as mimics of human culture, most ancients of the Americas regarded the monkey as a mediary between man and the supernatural. A lovely blackware vessel from these indigenous of ancient Peru, impressive for its artistry, technical prowess, and erotic subject matter! Size: 3" L x 7.1" W x 5.3" H (7.6 cm x 18 cm x 13.5 cm)
