Gerrit Rietveld (Dutch 1888-1964) for G. A. van de Groenekan Military Chair I, design conceived 1923 branded manufacturer's mark H.G.M. / G.A.v.d. GROENEKAN / OF BILT NEDERLAND., wood, plywood, nuts and bolts (91.5cm high, 41cm wide, 52cm deep (36in high, 16 1/8in wide, 20 1/2in deep)) Literature Vöge, Peter, The Complete Rietveld Furniture, Rotterdam: 101 Publishers, 1993, pp.62-3, no.55, illustrated, for example of this model in differing colourway. The chair was originally made for the Catholic Military Home in Utrecht. With this model Rietveld made a departure from earlier methods of construction, with the front leg being connected to the inside stretcher by a lap joint and secured by a bolt, and the back leg is similarly constructed, but this time on the outside.
