Description
Large gold pendant worked in kundan technique, set with different precious and semi-precious stones and champlevé enamels. In ancient Sanskrit navaratna - literally "nine gems" - identifies a group of apotropaic jewels made according to a scheme which includes eight different gems (diamond, pearl, red coral, hessonite garnet, blue sapphire, cat's eye, yellow sapphire, emerald) arranged in a circle around a central ruby. According to ancient Indian astrology, the eight stones would constitute the essence of as many celestial bodies orbiting around the sun symbolized by the central ruby. These nine gems embody the memory of the primordial encounter between Agni, personification of the solar energy of the universe and the sublunar, liquid world of Soma.
