Western Europe, France, Regence period, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. An opulent pair of brass and rock crystal girandoles, each intricately comprised of a bottom tier of 5 lights surmounted by 3 additional tiers of 5 decorative arms and a faceted, spear-shaped finial, all supported by flared foot. The scrolling, vegetal motif arms display dangling ornaments of huge, teardrop-form rock crystal, as well as floral and faceted sphere-shaped glass, while the central columns are adorned with decorative glass coverings. Note the botanic form of each drip pan giving each candlestick the appearance of blooming from a flower. Size (both about the same): 11" W x 26.5" H (27.9 cm x 67.3 cm)

The Regence period was a transitional time in the decorative arts of France that emerged in the early 18th century, during the regency of Philippe II, duc d'Orleans, for his young nephew Louis XV. It was a reaction against the heavy, Baroque style of Louis XIV and was characterized by lighter, more curvilinear forms and a greater emphasis on comfort and intimacy, as seen in the spiraling arms and natural motifs of these girandoles.

Tip of finial on one has been professionally repaired. Some abrasions in areas and bending to wire holding ornaments. Otherwise, one is intact and both are excellent with rich patina. Remains of candle wax in capitals from prior use. Old Bonhams & Butterfields label attached to base of one.
