Tiffany & Co. Sterling Presentation Trumpet, New York, 1861, the wide mouth piece with rolled rim, above the midsection with applied palmettes flanking the inscription 'Captn. Edward Todd,/From Owners of the Ship/ Comet./ as a/ Mark of their Esteem/ and/ Appreciation of his Fidelity/ July 4th 1861.', the bell with chased depiction of the Comet surrounded by a rope border with anchors on either side, ht. 15 3/8 in, approx. 24.45 troy oz. Footnotes: The extreme clipper ship, 'Comet', was built in 1851 by William H. Webb, New York, Yard Number 62, for Bucklin & Crane. At 241 ft, 'Comet' specialized in passenger and cargo trade to China and San Francisco from New York. In February of 1853, 'Comet' raced another Webb built clipper ship, 'Flying Dutchman', from San Francisco and arrived in New York in record time in 83 days and 18 hours, beating the 'Dutchman' by 30 hours. In March of 1863, 'Comet' was acquired by Liverpool based T. M. Mackay & Co. for the Black Ball Line and renamed 'Fiery Star'. The ship's wool cargo caught fire on April 13th, 1865, on a voyage from Moreton Bay to London. Passengers and some crew escaped on lifeboats but were never recovered. The mate, 16 crew members, and one passenger, who stayed on the ship due to lack of lifeboats, were later rescued by 'Dauntless'.
