Description
Flemish, 17th Century
Paul and Barnabas at Lystra
Bears the date Anno 1644 within a cartouche affixed to the end of the altar
Oil on canvas
33 1/2 x 43 1/4 inches (85 x109.9 cm)
The story depicted here is described in Acts 14:8-19. Saint Paul and his companion Barnabas, while preaching in Asia Minor, came to the town of Lystra. Soon after their arrival, Paul healed a lame man, a miracle that so impressed the citizens of the town that they thought that the two men must be the gods Zeus and Hermes. Hearing of this, the priest of Zeus brought oxen and garlands to the city gates to sacrifice to them. When Paul and Barnabas understood what was happening, they tore their clothing in distress and ran among the crowd, protesting that they were merely human beings who had come to preach the Christian gospel. The assembled people were so incensed by this that they stoned Paul to unconsciousness, dragged his body out of the city, and left him for dead. Fortunately, he soon recovered, and the next day he and Barnabas left Lystra to preach in another town.
