Description
Ancient Near East, Holy land, Greek Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 2nd century BCE. A wheel-thrown pottery transport amphora exhibiting an attractive white hue around its inverted piriform body. A pair of arching handles rise up from the shoulder and connect to the neck just beneath a thick, collared rim. This type of rim suggests that the vessel was plugged with a stopper made from either plaster or pitch and perhaps held food items like stewed fruits or preserved meat. Size: 8.8" Diameter x 15.5" H (22.4 cm x 39.4 cm); 16" H (40.6 cm) on included custom stand.
