Friedman used it to lay down clear, concise and precise definitions of cryptologic terms. Up to this time, the terminology used in the field was inconsistent and confusing, but Friedman's definitions cut through the confusion so well that they became the accepted terms. Even the terms of "cryptanalysis" and "cryptology" as used in this document owe their origins to Friedman's book. Elements of Cryptanalysis would be expanded into the U.S. Army's textbook Military Cryptanalysis, Parts I-IV starting in the 1930s. Kahn 384-5.
