The frame is glazed on the front and the back, so the atlas text to the reverse may also be viewed. The frame measures 23 1/2" x 28 1/4".
Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, published in 1570, is widely considered to be the first modern atlas, it is reputed to be the most expensive book ever made, and it stands as one of the true landmarks in the history of cartography.
Condition
There is a moisture stain to the bottom right corner of the mat. A few spots to the lower right of the sheet, most visible from the reverse. The hand-coloring of the historiated initial from the text has stained the sheet, showing through on the map in the area of Norway and the North Atlantic.
