Description
Fernand Vergucht (Belgian/New Orleans, 1923-2003), "The Louisiana Slave Revolt of 1811," from The American Negro Story, ca. 1961-1968, hand-painted glazed tiles, signed upper left, tiles mounted on a wood panel, presented in a gilt metal gallery frame, H.- 17 in., W.- 48 in., Framed- H.- 17 1/2 in., W.- 48 1/2 in. Note: Fernand Vergucht, a native of Antwerp, barely escaped the Nazi invasion during World War II, and moved to New Orleans in 1956, where he quickly established himself in the art scene through painted tiles and that drew upon Old World craftsmanship in modern settings. Vergucht and his half-brother, Jacques deClerq, established a home and working gallery/kiln in the French Quarter at 1012 St. Philip Street. His home was open for gallery tours and his work was regularly exhibited at Nahan Galleries in the 1970s-1980s, including pieces from this series. As depicted in this lot, his tile art often gave visual primacy to marginalized people of different races, religion and sexual orientations through the human figure.
