ROSE AND HOPKINS

John K. Rose was born on November 15, 1849 in Ayr, Ontario, Canada. He came to Colorado in 1881 and worked in the Bohm Photography Studio in Denver. He married Nellie M. Hopkins in 1882 and they had three children. He worked for the W.L. Bates Photography Studio in Denver from 1882 through 1884 and in Chicago in 1885. In 1885 he returned to Denver and purchased the Bates Photography Studio. The new studio was called Rose and Company.

Benjamin (Bennie) S. Hopkins was born in 1859 in St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada. He came to Colorado in 1881. In 1885 he went to work for Rose and Company located on the Tabor Block at 16th and Larimer. The name of the company was changed to Rose and Hopkins in 1895. Hopkins died at age 56 on March 26, 1915.

The Native American photographs were probably taken in Denver during the Festival of Mountain and Plain. The festival was held annually from 1895 through 1912. It was a week-long celebration of parades, contests, balls, demonstrations and ceremonies. An Indian delegation of over 100 Indians would pitch teepees in City Park and hold ceremonies, dances, mock battles and sporting events. Additionally, Rose and Hopkins probably took advantage of the Native American participation in the Trans- Mississippi Exposition and Indian Congress held in Omaha, Nebraska in 1898 and 1899. As the preponderance of their images are of Colorado and Southwestern tribes and taken during the years of the Exposition, it is likely that the studio photographed many of the Indians on their journey to and from the event.
