Description
Jeptha's Rash Vow, worked by Mary Williamson Barnwell, Cambridge, UK c. 1660.
This extremely rare documented c. 1660 needlework picture depicts Jephta returning home to the warm greetings of his lovely daughter after vanquishing his foes in a war. His displeasure in seeing her is evident in his body language. This stems from a vow he made with the Lord stating that (if he won the war he would sacrifice the first thing that greeted him when he returned home). It is an Old Testament story teaching one not to make promises lightly.
On the backboard is a very early hand written note and also an early hand written note transcribing the earlier one (see below), and a typed story of Jeptha, Judges 11:29-40, and an early gallery sticker, and two red wax seals.
