Item Details
Description
This is an original, mammoth plate albumen photograph from circa 1870-1880’s of a Round Up at Robbers’ Roost, the iconic outlaw hideout in southeastern Utah Territory of Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch (later known as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) and policed by Daniel Boone. Robbers Roost was an outlaw hideout used mostly by Butch Cassidy and his Wild Bunch gang in the years of the Old West. Robbers Roost was on the road leading to Cheyenne, Wyoming Territory along the Cheyenne River near the Robber’s Roost stage station. The Cheyenne-Black Hills Stage & Express hired 24 year old buffalo hunter and freighter Daniel Boone to protect the passengers along this deadly route. When the stage robberies increased in 1877, U.S. Marshal Gus Shnitger deputized Boone and others to control the road agent problem. Some of the men he shot included Tom Price and Prescott Webb, Cornelius “Lam Johnny” Donahue and Archie McLaughlin (both hanged as vigilantes), as well as Frank Towle and “Curly” Grimes. He took Towle’s head to Cheyenne and then to Carbon County Courthouse, trying to claim a reward, without success. Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch, who mainly operated out of the Hole-in-the-wall near Kaycee Wyoming Territory, constructed a hide out in Robbers’ Roost in association with outlaws Ann Bassett and Josie Basset who had a ranch near Brown parks and would supply the outlaws with fresh horses and beef in their winter hideout. The gang originally was referred to as the “Hole in the Wall Gang” and later was popularized by the 1969 movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Led by Butch Cassidy it included Elzy Lay, the Sundance Kid, Tall Texan, News Carver, Camilla “Deaf Charley” Hanks, Laura Bullion, Flat-Nose Curry, Kid Curry, and Bob Meeks (also noted Will Carver, Ben Kilpatrick, Harvey Logan as the Fort Worth Five). This large, mammoth plate albumen photograph is marked in the image, “170. Round Up At Robber’s Roost, On Cheyenne River, Of – T. A. 999 S. & G., A. U.T. And Others.” The back is written, “Roundup at Robbers Roost Cheyenne River Dakota $350”. The image shows a landscape view of a few cowboys rounding up cattle in the Robbers Roost Cheyenne River area. Quite possibly involving famous or infamous individuals. The image has some aging to the right side and a slight cracking on the bottom middle but mostly well kept. Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. Measures 9” by 6.5”. U6
