Description
A Late Classic Navajo Serape c. 1875 native handspun wool, recarded and respun bayeta, American flannel, indigo and aniline dyes Provenance: Property from a Private Southwest Collection Anthony Berlant, Santa Monica, CA Illustrated: Walk In Beauty, plate 47 "As soon as synthetic dyes were introduced to the Navajo weavers, they employed the new color range to its full potential. Although they used a limited palette in their earlier blankets, the Navajo came from a tradition of sand paintings whose rainbow hues provided a model of complex color conceptualizations. In the Navajo culture itself, color played an important role--many references to color occur in legends and prayers," Berlant, Anthony and Mary Hunt Kahlenberg, Walk In Beauty: The Navajo and Their Blankets, p. 140.
