A very rarely encountered type of high quality, mounted entirely in silver. The hilt with characteristic peaked pommel and hooked grip, elaborately engraved overall with scrolling vinework, the massive guard with rolled quillons terminating in finely-modeled dragonheads. The massive, curved, single-edged blade of hussar type, wrought with double fullers at the spine, with a radiused cutting tip and retaining much original polish. Engraved with Eastern European (?) motifs, at the left forte a large sun in splendor together with two stars and 10 smaller stars, and at the right forte a large crescent moon beneath a horseman wearing a (possibly Polish or Sarmatian?) caftan and turban and carrying a riding whip, accompanied by a dog, above which appears to be the same individual, now enthroned with arm upraised. In its leather-covered wooden scabbard with exceptionally large silver mounts engraved en suite with the hilt in foliate and geometrical designs. Latter 18th century.
