Description
The robust, shallowly-curved blade with a pronounced central ridge and raised yelman back edge developing into a rounded spear tip. The diminutive iron guard with lozenge-form ecusson wrought with pronounced central ridge and terminating in a pair of expanded domed quillons. The distinctive lobate iron pommel quite comparable with other Eurasian types, including Khazar and Avar. The tapered tang retains a large, domed rivet with decorated border which originally secured the grip or grips. 9th-12th century. Excavated. As found. Ex-Egil Haggmann Collection, N.Y. 1979. Reportedly Mongol, acquired in Yarkand, Kashgar Province, Xinjiang. Overall length 90cm/ 35.5”. Condition V
