Description
SOLOMON ISLANDS WOOD, WICKER AND STONE AXE, Early-to-mid 20th century. A wedge-shaped wooden axe set into a wooden cavity that extends outwards, mirroring the blade shape at one elongated end to form an adze, which also serves as a counterweight to the blade. The wood is wrapped in woven rattan with leather and a loosely woven fabric further binding the axe head. A narrow, cylindrical wooden handle at a ninety degree angle to the axe provides a hand hold. This form of axe is similar to those made mainly in the villages of Margravial and Kumbirai. - height: 20.5 inches.
