TOMMASO, MARINETTI FILIPPO
Les mots en liberté futuristes. Milan: Edizioni Futuriste di "Poesia", 1919. Publisher's typographical wrappers printed in red. 7 9/16 x 5 inches (19 x 12.75 cm); 107 pp. [3 ff.], including the four large folding typographical designs. The spine of the wrappers restored with tissue, the last plate (pp. 109-110) adhered to the final text leaf, p.107 and bound out of order thus, but textually complete.
A extraordinary tour-de-force of graphic and typographic design, with the four folding plates by Marinetti: Bataille à 9 Étages; Après la Marne Joffre Visita le Front en Auto; Le Soir, couchée dans son Lit..; and Une Assemblée Tumultueuse. "This book is considered the peak of Marinetti's typographic experimentation, reflecting both his gift as a designer, his talent as a visual poet and expositor and his ingenuity as a publicist ... it is the single work which expresses the doctrine and visual praxis of literary Futurism" (Ex Libris 9, #93 and #94). "The book also contains Marinetti's four most famous tavole ... In these tavole futurist typography reaches new heights of materialistic poetry. The introduction not only contains Marinetti's demand for democratic interventionism but also makes a proud affirmation of the merits of the aesthetic revolution which had been unleashed by futurism." MoMA The artist and the book in twentieth-century Italy, 1992, p. 328.
