BOEING X-53 ACTIVE AEROELASTIC WING CONTRACTOR'S MODEL. Mixed materials on wooded base, Toys & Models, c.2002, wingspan 11 1/2-inches, fuselage 16 1/4-inches, 9-inches tall, 'F/A-18 Active Aerolastic Wing / Scale 1/40' on base. The X-53 was a joint project by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Boeing Phantom Works and NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center. The project utilized Active Aeroelastic Wing Technology, which integrates wing aerodynamics, controls and structure to harness and control wing aeroelastic twist at high speeds and dynamic pressures, on a modified McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet. The present model was made by Toys and Models for Boeing and NASA sometime before the aircraft was re-designated the X-53 in 2006.
