MARTIN MARIETTA X-24B CONTRACTOR'S MODEL. Mixed material on wood base, Southwick Models, c.1975, wingspan 7 1/2 inches, fuselage 14 inches, 7 1/2 inches tall, plaque on the base reads: 'NASA Flight Research Center.' Provenance: Marvin Miles, former Los Angeles Times Aerospace Editor (presented to him by Martin Marietta; purchased from his estate). The X-24 was an experimental aircraft developed under the joint U.S. Air Force-NASA PILOT program, designed and built to test lifting body concepts and experiment with the concept of unpowered reentry and landing, which was later used by the Space Shuttle. The aircraft was originally built as the X-24A, but rebuilt and modified with a rounded top, a flat bottom and a double delta platform leading to a pointed nose, and was redesignated the X-24B.
