Surprisingly clean and sound wall map of North America showing significant evolution of territories west of the Mississippi River following the Mexican-American War and during the height of the California Gold Rush. The Territory of New Mexico spans the entire area between California and Texas; Utah Territory reaches from California to Kansas; Washington and Oregon Territories extend from the Pacific all the way to Nebraska Territory at its largest extent, from Kansas to the border of British America. Oklahoma is comprised of just three Indian nations: the Chah-Lah-Kee, the Muscogee and the Chah-Ta. Many Indian Tribal lands are illustrated, as are early forts, explorations routes and early proposed routes for the Transcontinental Railroad. Western exploration routes and early roads include the Overland mail route to California, the Santa Fe Expedition (1841), the route from Ft. Smith to Santa Fe, and the Oregon Trail. In this early version of Monk’s map, the northern border of Sonora in Mexico helps define Lt. Emory’s route to California and still juts up into what eventually would become the state of Arizona. This is one of the earlier states of Monk’s map: it is positioned in between the first edition that shows the “Proposed” Territory of Nebraska (“Proposed” dropped in this version) and the next state which adds an explanatory note to the Nebraska Territory. This is also the early version that shows Mexico’s Sonora province poking up into future Arizona. Beautifully illustrated with many ship engraved illustrations and a lovely border frame. “New Map of that Portion of North America Exhibiting the United States and Territories The Canadas, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and Mexico also Central America and the West India Islands” published 1854 by Jacob Monk. The condition of this scarce wall map is exceptional. There are no stains and the varnish is intact. Although the upper right area appears to look like it’s stained, it is merely a wave in the paper causing a shadow in that area—it is not stained. The top of the map is partly detached from the original (and completely intact) hanging rod. There is a tiny loss of varnish and some cracking of the varnish in the top couple of inches of the map. A tiny and narrow stain is at the right edge margin near the top. A truly exceptional example. 56 x 60 image area.
