Description
Gerardo Garcia (Mexico, b.1970). "El Campanario" talavera Day of the Dead Bus. Signed on underside of base. A dynamic Day of the Dead bus by Mexican ceramicist Gerardo Garcia titled "El Campanario" and made in the traditional talavera style. Hand-painted in brilliant pigments, the sculpture portrays several calaveras on a psychedelic bus adorned with mesmerizing floral and geometric designs. A driver and 5 passengers are seen within while 2 more calacas ride on top, strumming a guitar and drinking a beer, accompanied by a cow-spotted pig, a coffin, a barrel, a peacock, and a milk churn. All figures face forward, displaying a variety of poses that ironically give the vehicle a lively and vivacious presentation, regardless of the post-mortem status of its riders. Though full of motion and energy, the bus is not whizzing forward, but for this moment is stopped with doors open as though offering the viewer the chance to come aboard and begging the question "Are you on the bus or off the bus?" Size: 9.5" L x 17.5" W x 14" H (24.1 cm x 44.4 cm x 35.6 cm)
