Description
A hand colored map titled "CHARLESTON, and Adjacent Country." with "J. Atwood" printed in bottom right corner. A variant of this map was included as "Plate 6" in the 1826 3rd edition of "A Geographical Description of The United States, with the Contiguous Countries. by John Melish." but has "B. Tanner. Sc." engraved in the lower right hand corner where "J. Atwood" is printed instead. We are including a scan of that page for reference and comparison only. As Philadelphia engraver John M. Atwood was born in 1817 and died in 1884 and would have been only 9 at the time of the Melish publication, we are assuming this version of the map was printed after 1826. The map in Lot 7 from this auction and from the same collection as this was marked with the year 1839 by a previous owner/dealer, but we do not know if this date is accurate or not. Map measures 7 1/8" x 4 7/8" mounted at corners on brick red matt board by unknown adhesive. Board measures 9 1/4" x 7 1/8".
Condition
Some light foxing. Creases where map was previously folded - possibly as originally issued. Hand colored. Indentation where paperclip used to be on top left side. Light edge wear. Other minor crease near bottom. Please review scans closely for further condition and please let us know if you have any questions prior to bidding.
