Hiroshi Yoshida (Japanese, 1876-1950). Japanese shin-hanga woodblock print titled "Gion yashiro (Gion Shrine Gate)" depicting the exterior of a shrine with several visitors outside. Pencil signed along the lower right; titled along the lower left. With the artist's seal in plate along the lower right; further stamped along the left margin.
One of the leading figures in the Japanese Shin-hanga movement, Hiroshi Yoshida was born in Fukuoka in 1876. In 1893, he moved to Kyoto and studied yoga and nihonga styles of painting and watercolors. Later in his life he started collaborating with the shin-hanga publisher Watanabe Shozaburo. Despite his late debut as a shin-hanga printmaker, he successfully put himself on the map as the greatest artist of the shin-hanga style and is especially noted for his excellent landscape prints. His prints are highly recognized in both Japan and overseas.

Condition
The sheet is toned and the colors are slightly faded. There is matburn along the margins. The paper is acidic which has caused it to become somewhat brittle. There is an approx. 1 inch long vertical tear running from the center of the bottom margin upwards. There are five pieces of masking tape along the verso of the print on the left and right edges (total of 10). There are two long pieces of tape running along the verso on both the top and bottom margins horizontally for the width of the sheet. The artwork is not framed.
