Description
Walter Feldman (1925-2017). "The North Wind", 2011. Woodcut. Signed and dated in pencil, lower margin. Title and edition number '1/20', in pencil, lower margin. Dimensions: 8" x 10" (image); matted: 16" x 18". "The North Wind" is another tribute to the masterful woodcut printmaking of Walter Feldman. At the same time that he was working on this woodcut, Feldman executed a number of acrylic works capturing the swirly atmospheric conditions he often witnessed at his Little Compton home. Feldman was somewhat weather obsessed, the constantly changing and unpredictable weather conditions of New England became the source of his amusement. Feldman excelled at printmaking. In 1952 he won the first prize at the Metropolitan Museum print exhibition launching his love of woodcuts. A lifelong printmaker his mastery of the medium was without limits. He continued experimenting throughout his career and this 2011 beautiful relief print series evidences the complexity of his designs. Walter S. Feldman completed his art study with a BFA from Yale University School of Fine Arts in 1950 and an MFA from Yale School of Design in 1951. A student of Josef Albers upon his return from WWII, Feldman absorbed many of the concepts of Albers. However, he evolved a more expressionist style with a particular interest in symbols.
